Maribor
You probably have heard much about one of the most beautiful places in the world – Maribor which lies on the river Drava. It is the centre of the Slovenian region of Lower Styria and its largest city. Maribor is a medieval city where you can see many wonderful historical sights. Visiting them will probably take you much time, so you can stay in one of the hotels in Maribor to have a rest and to gain strength before you continue. So let’s start! As in many other European cities built in a medieval tradition, perhaps the most interesting part of Maribor is its centre. A special place worth seeing is the old Jewish quarter squeezed around Zidovski stolp (Jewish Tower), built in 1465. The Maribor synagogue, which was probably erected at the end of the 14th century, is the best preserved Jewish religious temple in the territory of the Eastern Alps. And now it is used as an exhibition hall. It is connected by a defence corridor to Vodni stolp (Water Tower) which today contains a wine shop that sells the Maribor’s best wines. One of the most impressive buildings is Maribor Town Hall, situated on the town’s Main Square. It was built in 1515. Its most remarkable feature is the Renaissahce facade with a Venetian Renaissance balcony. Now the Town Hall holds an exhibition and functions as the centre of several cultural institutions. So when you visit all of these places you will definitely say that Maribor is a beautiful medieval city, which at the same time is very friendly.
